Hi Brian! Great site! I remember all eyes being on that battle in Tampa.
Also remember the lame attempt a company I worked for in Columbus trying to copy that same success by changing their name to Power Pig,
like that was the secret forumula to beat WNCI. One thing that was missing for historians (like me) is the question(s): What was going on at Q105 during all this? Would love to hear their take on the whole thing. What strategic moves were discussed. Why Q105 just played into the hands of Jacor, etc. Or is no one talkin? Anyway, just thought I'd give my two cents. What a great story. Keep up the great work on the site. the best.

Hey Brian- Awesome update. Well worth waiting for! I think the parodies and the sweepers used at the time were absolutely genius. Your promotions director and marketing people at the time were at the top of their game. Keep up the great work.

Re:
I enjoyed your Web site (ThePowerPig.com). Bravo!!
Mr. Holmes, I had never heard of this feud which you described before coming to you web site but I found the whole thing extremely interesting.
I live in (and listen to the stations of) the Washington D.C. / Baltimore area. At one time there were two Top 40 stations in my area (Z104, B102.7) and then a third station (Hot 99.5) came in and pushed one of the stations out (B102.7) and forced the other station to change format (kind of). Anyway, I tell you this because I didn't really see the extreme tactic used by the station in your area (The Power Pig) used up here. Guess the time of radio rivalry like that one is gone. I would have loved to have listened to all of this when it was happening, but you site is definitely the next best thing. Keep up the good work and here is a (hopefully) more modern picture of Mr. Gary Edens. Enjoy and keep up the good work. |

(taken from Radio-Info.com post) The site is outstanding, Brian. Excellent job on preserving the history of one of the great CHR feuds of all time...

|
Your new site is great! Kind of makes my poor old
WCIE site pale by comparison. Thanks for the
reciprocal link!
Your site brings back memories of Florida - I never
realized that the Power Pig came on just after I moved
there. It was a really hard catch from Daytona Beach,
but made it there with a weak signal. |
|
|
Web site looks great! I'd say the best station tribute site anywhere. The
Pig Past page brings back some memories!
Love the "Q stuff" page. You were right, Mike & Kent were awful. Johny D was really really
bad too.
If you ever do decide to expand on the Q stuff, let me know. I'm
sure I have all kinds of promo items I could scan, and of course good
audio... from the pre Mike & Kent days... man they were awful... did I say
that already? haha.
The Pig site brings back some memories of the
first day for me which I thought I'd just share with you. Of course I was
fully aware of the ransom going on during the weeks before. And I remember
listening to "93 Jamz" that Friday afternoon while doing homework listening
on my little mono boombox on my desk. I think the only song I recognized
that whole hour (or at least liked) was M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up the Volume." So
I was a bit disappointed that the format wasn't more "top 40" but was
thrilled that it might excite the radio scene a bit. Then when we all
learned that "93 Jamz" was all a stunt, I was quite disappointed and figured
that was it and the oldies were here to stay. My mom didn't believe that
though. She was a disappointed Z93 fan and she just had a feeling that
oldies would be gone by the next week and even wanted to bet me that it
would be top 40 within a week! Well she was right...
I was so sure it wasn't going to change, I didn't even bother to listen
during the day on that first Monday. It wasn't until that evening that I
found out about the Pig. My parents and I were in the car about 6pm or so,
going to eat at G.D. Ritzy's (which was a '50s style hamburger/hot dog place
in Bradenton) and my mom says... "Oh we should have gone through with that
bet! Z93 is gone!" I just couldn't believe it! In fact didn't believe it!
So we put the radio on 93.3 and hear Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting."
There it was, Tampa Bay finally had a second Top 40 station. I knew it
wasn't "93 Jamz" because surely they wouldn't be playing Richard Marx. We
arrive at the restaurant before the song ends, so I didn't get to hear the
name of the station. While we were eating I asked my mom if she heard a
station name or anything. She said yes, but couldn't quite remember. So
being the radio geek I was (and still am) I named off a bunch of common
radio identifiers, none of which rang a bell with her until I got to "Power
Hits." I was particularly thinking of "Power Hits 98 PXY" from Rochester,
NY. She said, "That's it, Power 93." I thought that was a pretty cool name
already and I didn't even know yet about the "Pig" part.
So we got out of G. D. Ritzy's (which by the way had the BEST hot dogs
ever!) and get back in the car to head home. I forget what 93.3 was playing
but it was much more up tempo and urban-leaning than the Richard Marx tune.
After whatever song that was, I heard the beginnings of Milli Vanilli's "Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You" as the on-air jock told me I was listening to "Power 93, the Power Pig." Actually I didn't even think he said "pig" at
first. "What did he say? Power Pick?" I had never heard anything like it.
After Milli Vanilli, there was another urban-leaning song and I realized
that this wasn't your typical Top 40 station.
Oh, one more memory. After a couple of weeks, I remember hearing on WRBQ a
liner that went like this: "Q105... We were here when they came, we'll be
here when they're gone."
Yeah.. riiiiight!

JUNE 2004
(WEBMASTER NOTE: This was taken from a much larger e-mail.)
Oh, one more note: Since top 40 music for the most part was crap in 1989 (in my opinion) I listened to Z-93 and was sitting in a car at the bus stop to Franklin Jr. High when the flip occurred. Amazing stuff... and Brad James told me yesterday that in-house research by FLZ's staff three days after the flip showed them to be number one across the board.

MAY 2004
Hi, I enjoyed reading your web site. There are a couple of things I would like to mention:
This all started when Jacor bought 91X in early 96. I was in San Diego when Jacor bought KECR 93.3 El Cajon, which was a religious station at the time.
I had long heard of the Power Pig, remembering them from the story that 20/20 had done on them in 1991. You can imagine how excited I was to hear that Jacor might simulcast the station soon. For the first three months, there was a simulcast of WDUV. Then, one night, they flipped to "Power Jam with Domino," and it was top 40 from then on, on KHTS.
A couple of interesting things happened after that. First, 91X began calling itself "The New Music Revolution." Next, I heard rumors that Jacor was trying
to buy Z90, which had calls XHITZ. Eventually, when they spun 933 off to Channel 933, after some stunting with "the Macarena," they were using some of the same imaging from WFLZ. The dance format that debuted on Channel 933 was more disco based and a lot more tame then what was heard on WFLZ, at least initially. I think this had a lot to do with the more conservative advertiser market in San Diego, and trying to start off a new station.
But the antics pulled by the original Power Pig did arrive later, when Jacor (who, along with Tim Dukes, I ended up working for) bought the once mainstream CHR leader, Q106. A funny thing about Q106, they were also formerly owned by Edens, and modeled after Q105, but were originally more rhythmic, and far more successful, perhaps the most successful station in the Edens chain, but Edens had a money problem, and the new owners Par Broadcasting took Q106 in a more AC'sh direction. That's another story for another time. Anyway, the popular morning team Jeff and Jer refused to work for Jacor, and signed with a rival Hot AC station, Star100.7. Jacor pulled out all of the tricks, (some I even have on tape) while keeping Q106's Modern AC format, but for some reason, it didn't work. To make a long story short, Q106 didn't survive, and Channel 933 became the first true mainstream CHR San Diego has had since the early 90's. They remain successful.
The last thing I want to mention is the logo. When Channel 9-3-3 debuted, I thought they would have a logo similar to 93.3FLZ. Instead, the opposite happened, and the logo that WFLZ has now, is based on what Channel 933 was already using. To this day, all stations using the oval, purple and lime green/yellow numbers with the "Channel" label are modeled after Channel 933, and even other stations like WPRO in Providence, and WBZZ in Pittsburgh have copied it, so it's now as common as the KISS FM name.
Hope that helps! BTW: I ended up working for Q106, but that was at the end, again, another story for another time....

Holmes, The site is unreal.. tons of homework and all the late night's online (this time not surfing for porn) have paid off! This site brings back so many memories that made me eat, sleep, and breath radio. I wasn't lucky enough to be a part of the launch of the pig, but when I entered the door @ 4002 Gandy in 1997 at the ripe age of 17, I knew I could never do anything but radio. The building was oozing with creativity and Legends like BJ Harris, Domino (the first crazy mo - fo to put me on air ) JoMama Johnson who with out Doodie I would still be cleaning CD's in the control room, Kane.. THE MAN! Spyder Harrison, Jeff (your locked on!) Thomas, Jennifer Jordan and the rest of the great staff that makes up WFLZ both yesterday and today.
For those who couldn't experience it first hand, you've done an incredible job re - creating The Power Pig! Now with Jeff Kapugi & Toby Knapp at the helm, the tradition of great programming on 93.3FM continues!

Dude- Good to hear from you. But I'm crushed. Never forget, the first afternoon drive guy for the New Power 93 was "Mark The Shark" Larsen! We were playin' everything from Stevie B to Aerosmith. Brian -Just wanted to tell you that the Power Pig tribute site is FUCKING AMAZING!!!!! I have found myself as of late, listening to old airchecks on there just before my shift to get me pumped up! I've followed WFLZ and it's history for as long as I have been in radio, and this just puts it all down on "paper".
Unlike a lot of the other emails you have posted, I'm not a current or former member of the airstaff, but maybe someday! Thanks again for the dedication and hard work putting a huge piece of radio history on the net...Oinkingly Yours

Nice site. In all of contemporary radio history, only one radio station stands out from the rest...The Power Pig. I remember the night we decided to paint over the radio station vans with pink house paint, and then the words in black. There were six or seven of us in the lot on Jackson street in downtown Tampa. We hadn't received any money for ransom from Q-105...and seventy two days later we were number one in the world. A special time...a special place...not to be seen again.

Wow, what great memories come to mind listening to those airchecks from Z93/Power Pig format flip. I only wish I had found this site sooner, because I tossed out many of my old cassettes, many of which were recordings of Power Pigs first year. I lived in St. Pete at the time, and was just a kid. Now I'm 25 and live in Missouri and work in radio. Whenever my brothers (still live in FL) & I get together, Power Pig is always brought up in conversation. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the memories, great stuff!

I just dropped by your Power Pig web site.! Wow, what a GREAT place to visit, spend time and have a lot of fun!! I look back on those days and think,
"My God, did we really do all that? YES WE DID and if we had it to do again, I'm sure we'd do it the same way!" LOL!! I knew we were about to make radio history when Marc Chase held up a "Screw Q-105" t-shirt at the first Power Pig staff meeting. Then took us to the parking lot and handed out cans of pink spray paint to cover a van with. The next step was black paint to write "Power 93, The Power Pig" on the van. To say the least, the Pig was the most fun I have ever had in all my 30 years in radio. Loaded with talented, creative people and a management team that was 2nd to none!
We had the best in the business with us. Randy Michaels, Marc Chase, Gabe Hobbs, Jack Harris, BJ Harris, Dave Mann, Tim & Tom, Jason Dixon and many more… If the Pig were the only station I had on my resume, I'd be totally happy! Again, great job with the site.. |

Oh my god man…what a great site! I grew up listening to The Power Pig…and only worked there for the last year of and a half of The Power Pig and then was a part of 93.3FLZ until May of 2002. I miss all the people but the site definitely brings back a ton of both childhood growing up and professional memories. I feel honored to have been a part of the greatest radio station ever! Ditto Jason Dixon's idea of a reunion…what a blast that would be.
Keep up the good work on the site!! |

Hi Brian, Thanks for the linkage on your Power 93 page. I put your link on my page when I discovered your amazing site about a month ago. You and your contributors have done an incredible job keeping the memory of that amazing coup alive. Scott Chase (aka Stretch Marx) and I worked together in Nashville after we both left Tampa. He used to bring in old tapes from The Pig and we'd laugh our asses off while listening to them. I have been waiting for someone to showcase this online for sometime. Take care, congrats on getting on FLZ after all these years yourself, and keep up the great work. Thanks again! Peace. |

I worked as Regional Sales Manager for the Power Pig turned from June 1993 though June 1997. Those were the greatest days in radio I've ever had. Domino and I have stayed in touch over the years and he's the one who directed me to the web site. I have got to go through the tons of photos and video that I shot while there (everyone knew I always had a camera loaded). Some of the photos and video include Pig-A-Palozza, BoomsDay, Pregnant Bikini Contests, Deion Sanders in the studio, Bubba appearances, Tom Steele, Hawk Harrison events, Holiday Parties, Guavaween, 3 Little Pigs, backstage at concerts, MJ & BJ... lots of stuff!
Jay-PHOTOS! Evidence, we love that. Make sure we can't still get charged on some of that stuff though first ok? Lookin forward to it Jay. -bh |

Brian, I just saw the Power Pig site for the first time... great job! It made me remember a time when radio was truly fun! I was fortunate to hear the flip!
I heard the early ransom teases, the flip, and all the "we now take you to a Q105 staff meeting" promos that made me laugh out loud. When "the Pig" first went on, I was doing nights in Sarasota at Z106. What a lot of people don't know is that the flip not only killed Q105, but it also killed our top 40 in Sarasota... the Pig took Z106 from a 7.5 to 3.7 in one book. Management in Sarasota then decided to flip from Z106 to Oldies 106.
I stayed at Oldies 106 and immediately joined The Power Pig...BJ hired me! I remember my first shift... a Saturday night from 6p - 10p. I followed Dave Mann! I will never forget the advice I got from Dave...the conversation went like this...
Dave - Have you ever been on the air here before?
Stretch - No this is my first shift.
Dave - OK, well there are a couple of rules you need to be aware of...
Stretch - (nervously) Ok...
Dave - Rule one... you can drink while you're on the air.
Rule two... you can have sex while you're on the air.
Rule three... you can basically do whatever you want to do, as long as you sound good... if you have any problems, just call me... have a good show.
Stretch - Thanks!
I truly loved my time at the Pig... It's one of my favorite times in radio. I am now searching my collection... I know I have some audio...some promos, some sweepers, & some of my airchecks... I will send them along!
PS-I know everybody remembers the vending machine with our favorite beverage!
I do remember listening to Z106 a few times from my house in Largo.
I also remember Oldies 106 very well also. First time I heard Oldies, I discovered where Jon 'Rock N Roll" Anthony went after he left The Pig.
At 18 years old, I applied with Jon to be an oldies jock. A month later, Jon was no longer there, but I got a call offering me full time overnights. Within three weeks, I was moved to nights where I spent three years as the #1 show 25-54. Scott, bet we could trade some good stories about nighttime on that island and what went on.
And oh yeah, THAT vending machine... best damn grape juice ever. LOL. Lookin forward to hearing your audio !!! -bh |
|
|
Brian you did a GREAT job with your tribute site. A lot of the imaging currently associated with Tampa stations like 98 Rock, Wild 98.7, Star 95.7, 97 X, and countless stations from across the country, are all direct influences of the Power Pig. (and, as you mentioned, Pirate Radio in L.A.)

Dude, I have to tell ya, the Pig tribute sight is un-Fucking believable. How much homework was that, just AMAZING! You have no Idea how old you have made me feel at this point. I have fired off the link to a bunch of old school PowerPig fans in Tampa who are going to freak when they hit the link tomorrow. I'm not even sure who I'm addressing this to, but I must say your attention to detail and accuracy on the history is more than I could possibly remember, and hell I was there! What a time capsule, and what a treat. I will scratch around for some old audio (if I can find it) and MP3 it to you. That was off the chart, definitely in the favorite links on the browser now. Warm Pink Power Pig regards!

When Randy Michaels was walking the halls..and there were rumblings of changing formats to Power 93..I would come in following Jack Harris & would invariably have some production to do...I would ask Jack to stay on a little after 10am..and he always said that he would stay and drive "The Pig"..We would joke that for a 100,000 watt station that was performing poorly it sure used up a lot of power..or in other words it was a "Power Pig" Randy heard that and liked it..shortly after that we were all called into a meeting with pizza downstairs of the Jackson Street building...we were all given a case of pink spray paint & were told to go out & paint the Z93 "Super Trooper" & station van... pink.
Shortly after that the station went out and bought a fleet of the TACKIEST early 70's cars..Big Fat Buicks and Caddilacs..all painted pink..We were secretly told that if a car caught fire or otherwise broke down, to "pull the tag and leave it"..as a sort of a tacky billboard..
That station had one mantra.."Take Q105 down at ALL costs".
It was quite a time..We would just drive over and sit in WRBQ's parking lot and it would rattle the hell out of them..we'd just sit there.
In a stroke of genius, Randy hired the WORST part timer he could find..this guy could barely talk.. and used the air name of Jimmy Crawford (Mason's real name)..another legendary move was the hiring of a very black sounding girl..and having her use the air name of one of RBQ's staffers mistresses. I produced the famous Mason Dixon Lie Detector promos...I have an aircheck of me on Z93 doing oldies, and one of me on Power 93..feeling very out of my element.. and very old..not knowing anything about that music, or being very hip..I was extremely uncomfortable, and ended up leaving to go to WYUU to do oldies with Scott Robbins. I'll send these to you via MP3.. See Ya Brian!
WOW! Great e-mail Jeff. Please anytime you feel like writing down anymore, I think I speak for everyone else, we'd love to read it. Jeff's history here in Tampa Bay includes U92, Z93, Paradise 93, 1250WDAE, Magic 96 and more. And for the record, Jeff sounded just fine on the Pig...

Yo man! Saw your site.. That's some cool shit! Unfortunately, I came to late.. I wasn't part of the "Original Pig", but still had a great time as a weekender in '01-'02 as Jay Valez... I found this audio clip of the Pig.. I might have more if I can just get myself to go through all my old tapes. If I do, I'll pass 'em along! Enjoy! |

brian thank u for adding me to ur awesome FLZ history page......u actually got my "complete" name right! lol

Brian, I love the site. I was a Power Pig/933FLZ intern from 92-95. Along with other notable interns like Goofy Jon, Eggroll, and Brian Fink. The name given to me back in the day from Boner and Jomama was "Mudbones". I was a regular on the intern-heavy Boner Radio Show. (midnight parking lot t-shirt sale) I also produced for BTLS for all of two weeks before my mom heard the show and made me quit...lol. Guido took over after that. |

he just did what he was told)

"Hi Brian, Thanks for putting together a great "Pig Site." Love it. Let me gather my thoughts as they relate to The Power Pig, 93.3 WFLZ. Many of the vocals I cut were sent on reel-to-reel from my studio in Nashville to Tampa, to be produced in-house. Often counter to counter via the major airlines. I produced the Pig's start-up package, with ton's of bumpers. That got the station rolling until Marc Chase (The Boss Hog) hired Brian James from
B-94/Pittsburgh (my former station in the early 80's) to become full-time creative services director. From then on they used Brian, Ernie Anderson and myself in rotation as the voices as the station evolved. I believe I had the Power Pig as a client for 5 years. It was an awesome experience.
Thanks so much! |
Frequently Asked Questions about ThePowerPig.com
Got a question? E-mail it to ThePowerPig@aol.com |
|
Pages are not loading
or loading slow? Audio not loading or taking forever? |
This is most likely because you access the internet through a dial-up provider. Some pages take a while because they are graphic intensive. We've taken every step to make the loading process foror dial-up users much easier than Version 2.0 was.
If you have high speed connections and audio is taking a long time to load that may be because the audio cut is LONG. There are a few cuts on here over 10 minutes and a couple even an hour long. If you want faster audio downloads, I suggest high speed access. |
How often is the site updated?
|
The most current version of this site is found at www.ThePowerPig.com. It is updated whenever needed, which has been about once a week. |
|
|
Any changes, updates, or new additions will be noted on the homepage in the "What's New and What's News" section at the bottom. |
Can you e-mail me when it's updated?
|
Yup! No problem. E-mail us at ThePowerPig@aol.com and tell us where to send it or you can now find out "What's New&What's News?" right on our homepage. |
Can I advertise on or donate to ThePowerPig.com?
|
The purpose of creating this site is not to generate revenue. If you have something you want to promote that would be of interest to fans of The PowerPig.com then e-mail Brian Holmes at Raydiodude@aol.com to discuss what we can do for you. |
Didn't this site used to be on the 933flz.com web site?
|
Yes it did. That's where Version 1.0 began as a sub-section on my bio page when I was a part of the 93.3FLZ airstaff. Although the pages still remain as of this writing, they have not been updated for months. Everything that was on that site is now found here at ThePowerPig.com plus there is tons of new stuff and some audio clips that couldn't really be posted on the 933flz.com site due to possible conflicts of interests. |
Why does the hit counter on the front already say 17,000+?
|
This site in it's previous Version 1.0 on the 933flz.com site and Version 2.0 here on ThePowerPig.com account for the number of hits. |
Where's the audio? There's not enough audio!
|
Audio is in the PIG PEN. I have a huge personal collection of Power Pig audio. On Sept. 5th, 2003 the "Audio/'The Noise You Couldn't Ignore" page debuted with a lot of short audio clips. There are now nearly 200 and more are coming as well. I have A LOT of longer airchecks and tapes of shows, it just takes time to listen to it all and then gettin it up on the site. Keep checking back as a lot of former and current staffers have been turning stuff in or putting stuff together for the site.
If you have any Power Pig / 93.3FLZ audio, no matter how small, e-mail us & let me know: ThePowerPig@aol.com |
I click but get no audio.....
|
All but a few audio clips are now just generic MP3 Files. The MP3 files will play in whatever player you have set to be your default player for MP3's. If for some reason they do not, WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER will open them. Any other problems, feel free to e-mail with questions and we will try to help. |
|
|
You have any? Please send them to ThePowerPig@aol.com. We currently have several galleries up on the PIG PICS page. |
You didn't list (fill in name of promotions person, sales person, janitors, etc here) on the PIG PEEPS page....
|
In order to be listed, the person had to have some sort of on-air presence on the station, whether it was as a DJ, sidekick, intern, co-host, voice over guy, whatever, as long as they were heard on air. |
Who the hell cared about these schmucks THIS MUCH to do this?

Brian Holmes is the owner and webmaster of ThePowerPig.com. He created the concept, designed and wrote everything on the site. Fan of the Power Pig since the very first morning it started, Brian briefly interned at The Power Pig in 1990 at only 15 years old. Joined Power Pig's then-owner Jacor Broadcasting in 1996 when they bought Oldies 106 (WSRZ)/Sarasota where he did nights.
He was Program Director/afternoon guy at rocker 97X(WTBB FM) and Assn't Prog. Dir of CHR Island 106 both in Panama City in 1997 before heading back to the position he had left in Sarasota, adding Ops. Manager of news/talk 1450 WSPB to his duties. In 2000, he joined the staff at Newsradio 970 WFLA and from April 2002 to February 2004 was also a part of the 93.3FLZ airstaff. Need to know more? CLICK HERE or CLICK HERE.

Have a lot of free time on your hands huh?
|
Actually no. That's why I built the site. More and more these days I am asked about the history behind the WFLZ call letters and The Power Pig. There are so many awesome stories to tell, there's NEVER enough time. I wanted to give the stories and the staff the justice they deserved by giving it a forum. After searching the web to see what Power Pig stuff was out there, I found none. I found a lot of tribute sites to great stations like the one that inspired this site, KQLZ Pirate Radio/L.A. I felt The Power Pig deserved to hang with the big dogs. |
More F.A.Q's are coming.....like....
Doesn't/Didn't Bubba's dad own The Power Pig? Why doesn't The Power Pig exist today?
When The Power Pig started, they were totally broke right?
Radio JUNKIES, check out PIG LINKS for other radio tribute sites you should see!
General comments or suggestions for the site can be sent to ThePowerPig@aol.com.
