93.3 FM The Power Pig lived on until November 2003, just not in Tampa. The logos above once represented WPGG-FM 93.3 in Evergreen, Alabama which had broadcast at 100,000 watts all across southern Alabama. It was this HUGE signal for a bunch of tiny cities, with a part country music/part talk format. They had a small website at www.powerpig.com which is why this site became www.THEpowerpig.com instead. The station has been sold and was rumored to be moving into the Pensacola or Ft Walton Beach markets. On the left below is a picture of the control board from WPGG, and Al Burns, News Director of The Alabama Power Pig. On the right, the station's coverage map from the old website. |
Look what used to exist as an online station, a Power Pig...
Well, I'm not sure it actually ever functioned or broadcast but in this interview with Chris, a part-time Polygraph Examiner, and 26 y/o founder of PowerPigRadio.com (site doesn't exist now), he explains exactly what his game plan is for his new station. He has secured a studio location, equipment, even explains his format and demos. Sounds good so far right...here's a few quotes I pulled from the interview:
"At nineteen, I thought that was ridiculous. Rules? Playlists? Chris? Never !!! So, after 6 years of going from radio station to radio station, I decided that, as a hobby, I will build my own radio station."
" We have a real studio with real equipment sold to us from a company that deals in real used radio broadcast equipment. As for our studio, as soon as I take my greedy ex to court to force him to give it back, I will move the studio, in a truck, to my new apartment, in the spare bedroom, with foamed walls to make it as realistic as possible."
"I grew tired of being fired from radio stations because of automation equipment. So, ideally, I would have a full time staff of trained DJ's to run the station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but this makes little to no money at all, and any of PowerPig Radio's staff will be made up of volunteers who are bored and myself."
" I plan to have a 1-800 telephone number installed in the studio for a listener / request line. I have about 50-75 different people out there who know the PowerPIg radio name, and they listen to the stream when they can, and that indicates to me that we are growing."
"As of now, I"m running a mixed format of AOR, CHR and Hot AC. I want to do a block format, but I need to keep the 3 formats rotating in each hour for now so that night owls won't think we are AOR only and the daytime listeners won't think that we're just totally Britney. So basically, my target will be Male: 18-24. Right now the people who navigate the site beyond the audio stream are other Web developers and other ShoutCAST users.."
" I want to take advantage of the Webcasting Anarchy and be as controversial as I can be."
I'm sure you get the point by now. It amusing once you realize he's serious. CLICK HERE FOR THE WHOLE INTERVIEW |
Were there imitators? OH YEAH. We even imitated ourselves.... This billboard was for a rock station our parent company at the time (Jacor) put on the air in Cincinnati. It was created to help "protect" our other rock station there, the legendary 102.7WEBN, whose longtime logo/mascot has been a frog (right).
There were other PIG wanna-be's also....
- There was a 93.3 The Power Pig in Jacksonville for a short time.
- A short lived 105.7 The Power Pig in Columbus, OH in 1990.
- Jammin 92, The Party Pig in Cleveland.
- When ya can't beat em, join em right? Even Mason took our idea to Birmingham with him,he just got the farm animals confused when he created Kix 106, The Power Cow. Yes, we said COW. (Didn't last long) |
And credit given for being a little PIG-curious:
These are from the old Pirate Radio/Los Angeles. Pirate Radio 100.3 KQLZ launched with an aggressive "Rock 40" format in Los Angeles on March 17, 1989, just six months before the birth of The Power Pig in Tampa Bay. The man behind Pirate Radio was non other than former Q105 Q Morning Zoo creator Scott Shannon. Check out the tribute site for Pirate Radio by CLICKING HERE. It is top notch. As you read through it, notice the similarities in Pirate Radio vs. The Power Pig...... |
