No one on the staff had any idea they were starting a legend that day, but it soon sunk in. Within days, the jocks were mobbed by listeners, within a week or two came the newspapers and trade magazines. In just 71 days, the Birch ratings service had The Power Pig at #1 . They had kicked Q105's ass ! But just how did they do it? Best way to find out is from the guys & gals themselves so ThePowerPig.com is saluting The Original Power Piggers in this special tribute.
We asked them to tell us some of the stories from behind the scenes we never knew about.
And boy did they! Click here to check out the stories!
2/11/06 - We are finally back up and running !
I'm excited, ThePowerPig.com is finally back up and running !! There are many pictures and links that currently do not work. I will be slowly fixing those. Once the site is back at 100%, I will do some updates.
We are on new servers very generously provided by Troy Dayton at JockConference.com. Thank you so much Troy !!
8/02/05 - The Latest Scoop !
First of all, thanks to everyone who visits on a regular basis. We've had 26,000+ hits on this site since it began. Thank you also to everyone who has recently contributed stuff to the site. Rest assured if you've contributed anything and haven't seen it posted yet that it will be.
So here's what's up: Believe it or not, the webmaster of ThePowerPig.com (me) along with MasterofRadio.com webmaster Rich Marino teamed up to create Q105TampaBay.com, a tribute to the Top 40 days of WRBQ FM & AM which is now up and running. Hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoy this site.
And before everyone asks "Why the hell is the ThePowerPig.com guy launching a Q105 site?" I'll answer that now:
#1 - Q105 was the station I grew up on and a the station that started my fascination with radio. It was The Power Pig that FIRMLY made up my mind that not only was I was going to do radio for a living but that I would also be OBSESSED with it (in a good way, lol).
#2 - I am very interested in preserving radio history for the future generation of radio people. I have gotten many e-mails from up and coming radio talent that have told me they not only were inspired by the Power Pig site but that they had felt cheated that they never learned "how radio was" from broadcast school or college. They also said they learned much about personality radio and just how far "theatre of the mind" can go in radio. Those e-mails made all the work worth it because we all know radio today lacks personality, creativity and theatre of the mind.
#3 - Q105 was a legendary radio station in it's day, with big name talent rolling through there. It deserves it's own site.
So building that site took up my time. Now unfortunatley I have one more delay. I'm leaving Fly 92-1/Ft. Walton Beach to become the APD/night guy for 104.5 WSNX/Grand Rapids, MI and a weekender on 92.5 KISS FM/Toledo, OH. As soon as I am settled there and have my high speed internet hooked up, ThePowerPig.com updates will finally resume.
5/10/05 - Delay in updates !
The launch of the new station here in Ft Walton Beach (Fly 92-1) has ended up taking up more of my free time than I had originally thought it would. This is the stations first ratings period so I've needed to keep my eye on that ball. Things are starting to settle down a little so I anticipate being able to update this site regularly again fairly soon. There is so much great Pig stuff to come I can't wait to get back into it, including over 200 more audio cuts if not more. We also anticipate launching the new www.Q105TampaBay.com early this summer. Many are asking why would the Power Pig guy be involved in a Q105 Tribute Site.... I'll have the answer the answer to that for you very soon. Thanks for your patience and as always you can e-mail me at ThePowerPig@aol.com.
3/16/05 - New audio up...why was Scott Shannon on The Power Pig?
Sorry it's a day late! In the Pig Pen this update is Part 2 of the Tampa Bay CHR war composite plus an aircheck of THE Scott Shannon on the air with The Power Pig "Three Little Pigs" morning show. Shannon has always been credited as the guy who made Q105 into a powerhouse in the mid-80's. It's really classic RARE audio you don't want to miss.
3/13/05 - Announcement about HOLMES !
Finally... I begin my radio adventure/career once again, this time doing EXACTLY what I want to be doing which is not something many radio people can claim these days. I've moved to the Florida Panhandle to become the Assn't Program Director/afternoon guy for a brand new rhythmic CHR in
Ft Walton Beach/Destin, FL called FLY 92-1 (WFFY FM). We launched the station Thursday (3/10) and our staff hits the air Monday (3/14).
This won't effect ThePowerPig.com at all, it remains a high priority to me. All my contact information remains the same. (Quick note to my new competition Z96, please ask your employees to calling us enquiring about jobs. We need DJ's under 40 years old and that weigh LESS than a half a ton. THANKS!)
3/7/05 - Congrats to TIM DUKES !!
ThePowerPig.com sends congratulations to former Power Pig jock Tim Dukes (of Tim & Tom) for being named Program Director of Emmis Classic Rock station 97.9 The Loop (WLUP)/Chicago!.
3/1/05 - New audio up, new tribute sites coming, new news.
Wow what an update for March.
First off the audio: We have added part one of two of a tremendous composite of the Tampa Bay CHR war between Power Pig and Q105 from January 1990. It showcases both stations daypart for daypart right at the time when Power Pig had realized they were #1 and Q105 was about to implode the first time. Part two will be up March 15th. We've also added a new aircheck of Bubba The Love Sponges night show from 1994 plus a few new promos and other things.
Oh and BIG THANKS to Rich Marino who has provided us with audio from 1990 of Kix 106 The Power Cow / Birmingham, a station Mason Dixon and B.C. Brian Christopher launched after the Power Pig took over the #1 slot in Tampa Bay. I will post it up in the PIG PEN April 1st.
People news: Randy Michaels is back in the radio business... his new company RadioActive has permits to build over 20 NEW stations. CLICK HERE to read the story. Tim Dukes of Power Pig's Tim & Tom is now doing consulting work.
Update on some new radio tribute sites: Thanks to Universal E-Solutions, ThePowerPig.com is proud to soon launch new tributes to KKLQ Q106/San Diego AND a separate tribute to the top 40 days of Q105/WRBQ FM & AM. Anyone with audio from either of these stations, please contact myself at ThePowerPig@aol.com. More details on these sites next month.
Update on my whereabouts: Hoped to be able to share that today but still can't. An announcement is VERY close.
2/3/05 - New audio is up and personal announcement from HOLMES coming.
Ok new audio is up. Older stuff is in PIGPEN1, some more recent 93.3FLZ stuff is in PIGPEN2. Thank you to Robyn and Garrett who recent sent me A WHOLE LOT OF REALLY awesome audio including some great Power Pig airchecks AND some great audio of just how bad Q105 had become in 1989/1990. Can't thank you guys enough. The stuff will appear here over the course of the next few months.
I had intended this update to be quite a bit larger however I've been slammed with a personal project I like to call "Operation Get My Azz Back On The Air" LOL. I am happy to say the mission was more than successful as I will be back on the air and in a programming capacity as well. I will be announcing where I have landed in the next update if not sooner.
And hey radio history fans, coming soon will be an online tribute site for KKLQ/San Diego. More details soon.
2/1/05 - New audio coming 2/2 or 2/3. Sorry for delay.
1/11/05 - Some new picture additions.
Added a new pic of the WFLZ control board in the PIG PEN. Also added new stuff in PIG PICS including the Power Pig's "R.I.P. Q105" plaque in Gallery 1, Power Pig's mini- racing car in Gallery 2 & pictures of the 93.3FLZ studio today in Gallery 3.
1/10/05 - NOW's "BoobGate 2005" hype attempt going flat? ( o ) ( o ) New audio added.
Thank you to everyone who sent e-mails in response to my editorial about NOW's "Boobgate" hype attempt as I call it. I normally wouldn't use this forum to vent, however this is a website documenting the history of WFLZ, so since this issue was apart of ThePowerPig's past as well as being REALLY ridiculous, I felt something should be said. It appears that the editorial was featured on RadioDailyNews.com as well. Good news is that stations didn't buckle under NOW's pressure & instead fought back. Listeners to WFLZ/WFKS/KSLZ fired off 1300 letters & listeners to WKQI/Detroit fired off 700 letters to the FCC defending their right to be able to choose whether or not they get a boob job or not.
New audio in the PIG PEN includes the three Power Pig boob related promos, the 93.3/Q105 simulcast sweepers Pt.2, Power Pig Lie Detector Promo "Mason On Kabrich firing" & some more liners in the Virtual Cart decks.
In people news, former Power Pigger Tedd Webb has a new book out that centers about his trivia feature on 970 WFLA's AM Tampa Bay. It's available for sale at TeddWebbsTrivia.com. Former 93.3FLZ midday chick Lisa Paige spent some time over the holidays filling in on New York's Z100. And new 93.3FLZ night guy Wacker is now on the air.
And some great news here at ThePowerPig.com as we've just hit the 20,000 hit mark since the Version 1.0's debut back in August 2003.
1/5/05 - BoobGate 2005! ( o ) ( o ) How can they be indecent today & NOT back in 1989?
Boobs have been a staple of Power Pig/93.3FLZ promotions for years: "New You for '92", "Boobapalooza", "Breast Christmas Ever" have all been highly successful AND tasteful promotions that awarded breast enlargements or even reductions to some of the station's female listeners. But yesterday some women's groups decided to come out & say the contests are "degrading and unethical". Oh man, there's so much hypocrisy & ridiculous stuff I don't know where to start... Before everyone argues over whether this is "decent" or "indecent", look at how OBVIOUSLY transparent all this hype is... I'll be as brief as possible:
First off, read this release from National Organization of Women (NOW).
Ok NOW (pun not intended), this group is asking it's members to write letters to Clear Channel & the FCC regarding only WFLZ/Tampa, KSLZ/St. Louis, WFKS/Jacksonville & WKQI/Detroit. Let the questions begin, why ONLY Clear Channel stations & why only these four in particular when many other stations owned by other companies have also conducted similar contests? You also have to ask yourself, where the HELL were these groups back in 1992 when boob job contests first aired on The Power Pig in Tampa?? Where were they for the dozens & dozens of times this contest has been conducted nationwide over the past TWELVE years?
The sad answer is that this is all political & not one bit about women's health. It's a DESPERATE cry for media attention by a very vocal group that is rarely in the spotlight these days. In NOW's release, they have to make many many references to the "conservative media giant Clear Channel" who "sponsored pro-war rallies" and that "during the recent election season, Clear Channel stations took right-wing ideological stands, including banning the Dixie Chicks for speaking out against George W. Bush. The company's supposed red-state values don't appear to be offended by contests offering to increase a woman's cup size."
Kinda transparent don't ya think?
While NOW bashes Clear Channel because the company's views do not match their own, Clear Channel has single handedly SAVED the new liberal talk network Air America from going dark by changing formats on many of it's major market secondary AM stations to "Progressive Talk" carrying the bulk of the networks offerings. The bulk of these format changes even happened before the elections. So while some of Clear Channel's talk stations surely had hosts who "took right-wing ideological stands", they also made quite the achievement building entire stations around the liberal point of view huh?
Oh I should also point out that the information about a Clear Channel ban on the Dixie Chicks is ...yup, you guessed it, nothing but B.S. The radio company that banned the Dixie Chicks was Cumulus Media, not Clear Channel. Simon Renshaw, the Dixie Chicks' manager, even told the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee in that Clear Channel did not ban the group's music and had received a "bad rap."
Here's an excerpt from NOW's release: "The most important line of action is to send an e-mail to Clear Channel and to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Inform them that radio stations should not be using the public airways and the public trust to promote "extreme makeover".
Oh holy crap, LOL, I'm on the floor. Hey NOw, ever heard of the TV show "Extreme Makeover"? How bout FOX's "The Swan"? Ever heard of "Ambush Makeover"? Hey NOW members, are you also complaining about TV shows that feature actresses WITH boob jobs? What about movies? Hey I know, what about the surgeons actually DOING the surgery?? No, NOW must not be going there because their politics are in line with theirs... cause this IS about politics now REALLY isn't it, not about women's health. Oh, NOW also is complaining that the contest promotes "potentially dangerous surgery". FOR GOD'S SAKE, ANY SURGERY IS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS.
One more excerpt, a quote from
Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families, the other group jumping on the bandwagon with NOW for the publicity: "I try not to be judgmental about whether a large radio station should be giving away free toys to children instead of free breast augmentation."
Yup Diana, you are right & it's a shame actually, this year a LOT of children in Tampa did without toys this past Christmas because Bubba The Love Sponge's Toys For Tits campaign wasn't able to happen since of course he was pulled from the air. But I don't suppose you'll chastise Clear Channel for that now will you? I would LOVE to inquire what Diana & NOW's position is on women using their nice looking boobs as one more to insure those kids had toys. DIana, would you and the NOW group stop & protest the "promoting of unrealistic images of women" if it meant needy families wouldn't get those Christmas toys for their kids? Huh Diana.
Smell that fresh hypocrisy in the air... all from a group seemingly just smarting from the last election and the lack of attention being paid to them. Coincidently, we are just two weeks short of the one year anniversary of the Janet Jackson/Super Bowl boob scandal. Where was NOW then? See, this is REALLY about a group that hasn't had any media attention in a LONG time, isn't it. I think so. And Janet has paved the way for your silicone wave of complaints to the FCC right?
I think so.
See,
NOW needed attention for some reason. Then decided to jump on the "indecency" media bandwagon to get it. And to accomplish their need for attention, NOW is in turn USING and EXPLOITING it's own women members. They are using such "hot button topics/issues" & "buzz words/quotes" as conservative politics, Clear Channel, the FCC, the Dixie Chicks misinformation, etc to fire up these women to the point of filing the complaint letters with Clear Channel and The FCC. Enough complaints get's them the media attention they wanted. Sadly, the issue of women's health was completely buried underneath all the other CRAP they had to use to get any one to pay them any attention at all.
But I think we all know now, it wasn't REALLY about women's health....NOW was it?
In light of the national attention of the boob contests, ThePowerPig.com will feature three old Power Pig promos from previous boob related contests on January 10th, 2005. Make sure you check back then in the PIG PEN.
In doing some site maintenance/clean-up, we've moved this column to the main homepage & deleted it's former page. We've also shortened the length of the FLASH open by 50%. Those of you on dial-up that want/need to bypass the FLASH open can set your favorites to link to http://www.thepowerpig.com/ppindex.html.
12/25/04 - Lots of catching up! News about Tim Dukes, Randy Michaels!
For those who e-mailed wondering why ThePowerPig.com - Version 3.0 debuted with such a bang & then nothing for almost six weeks, don't worry, the site isn't going anywhere.
I had just simply moved to a new apartment at the end of November, a new apartment in the SAME complex ONLY across the parking lot. I had had Verizon's DSL service for two years & thought since I was literally only moving a couple hundred feet away, I could simply transfer my existing service/account easily to the new apartment. After approving my new service, Verizon then said my area wasn't qualified for DSL. This was a shock to me since I already had it for two years across the parking lot. Finally, I convinced someone there how moronic this situation was & they did this & that test over a week's time, then approved it... then the day it was to be turned on they turned around & again "disqualified" my area.
Needless to say, by the time I realized they were CLUELESS, a month had passed. Verizon not only dropped the ball but has their heads up their asses. Since high speed is imperative in keeping the site up to speed, I had to make other arrangements which ended up being Brighthouse's Road Runner service but of course I had to wait another week for my install appointment. Bitching complete. LOL.
Ok on to other news...Tim Dukes (of Power Pig's Tim&Tom) is exiting from his Regional Vice President/Programming & WKLS/Atlanta (96 Rock) Program Director positions as of December 30th. Tim told R&R he may remain with Clear Channel but that wasn't a done deal yet.
Speaking of R&R, they have just announced that the recipient of their 2005 "News/Talk Lifetime Achievement Award" will be former Jacor/Clear Channel top dog Randy Michaels. Congrats Randy!! And for those not keeping up, Randy has a new company called RadioActive & yup, they've been huntin for radio signals to buy.
Fans of the 93.3FLZ of today will find an adjusted line-up come January with Assn't Program Director Kane in afternoon drive, newcomer Ashlee Reid in middays (12p-3p) coming from WFLY/Albany (Fly92) and stepping into the night slot is Ryan Gallagher (aka Tommy Wacker) coming from KDWB/Minneapolis. Ryan's past includes working with current 93.3FLZ OM/PD Jeff Kapugi at Z107.7/St. Louis & also WRVW/Nashville (107.5 The River).
Ok, there's AWESOME new audio in the PIG PEN. All I'll say is this, did The Power Pig ALMOST simulcast on Q105 at one point...and we've got the sweepers to prove it. Plus a WHOLE bunch of other new stuff you haven't heard yet.
Next audio update will be January 10th. Everyone have a great holiday & an OUTPIGGINRAGEOUS New Year!
11/09/04 - NEW PICS, AUDIO & OTHER STUFF ADDED!
LOTS of new pics in PIG PICS Gallery 2, a few new audio cuts are in the PIG PEN, a couple changes in PIG PEEPS, a few new things in QSTUFF plus new posts in the PIG GUESTBOOK and new e-mails in CONTACT PIG! Have Fun!
11/03/04 - Big changes announced today at 93.3FLZ!!!
93.3FLZ Assistant Program Director & afternoon drive jock Toby Knapp is stepping down to become Program Director/afternoons of Clear Channel Top 40 station 104.7WNOK/ Columbia, SC, a station which is Brand Managed by 93.3FLZ's current Operations Manager/Program Director Jeff Kapugi.
93.3FLZ music director & night guy Kane will move up again, now to afternoons as well Assn't Program Director/Music Director. If that all wasn't enough, Ashlee Reid from FLY92-FM/ Albany, NY replaces Dana officially in the open 93.3FLZ midday slot (12p-3p).
11/02/04 - ELECTION DAY ! Rocking The FLZ VOTE! Huh?
Good luck to the two products of 93.3FLZ who are running for office here in the local Tampa Bay area - Bubba The Love Sponge for Pinellas County Sheriff and Dave "The Dwarf" Flood from The MJ Morning Show who is running for the Hillsborough County District 2 Water & Soil Conservation open seat.
New stuff still going in almost daily including new audio in the PIG PEN & new pics in PIG PICS. For those of you that wanted to read all of the newspaper & trade magazine stories written about The Power Pig / 93.3FLZ we have hooked you up in the PIG PAST section. Every time you see this symbol you'll find the link to either a story online or to scan of the article. Also this icon
means you can either click it & the noted file will open in another window or you can right click on it & select "Save As". These are for old press clippings & stuff that I've had to scan but didn't want to resize.
Lastly for this update, former Power Pig overnight jock Russell The Love Muscle has been added to the 15th Anniversary Tribute, check that out by clicking here.
10/28/04 - Great launch week !
Thank you to everyone who helped launch Version 3.0 !
There's A LOT of new stuff up even since the launch on Monday. New audio in the PIG PEN, new pics in PIG PICS & as the e-mails come in we'll post them in CONTACT PIG. Thank you to Corey at about.com who once again gave us a nice story.
Also thank you to Larry at RadioDailyNews.com.
And last, a quick congrats to the current staff at 93.3FLZ for picking up "CHR Station of the Year" & to Music Director/night guy Kane for winning "CHR Personality of The Year" at the Radio Music Awards this week.
10/25/04- Launch of Version 3.0....FINALLY ! "So what took so long?" is the big question!
Well, mostly due to unwelcome guests that kept dropping by. No not relatives from up north....
HURRICANE CHARLEY -
HURRICANE IVAN -
HURRICANE FRANCES -
HURRICANE JEANNE
...all in a 4-5 week period last month. Three of which went through the Tampa Bay region, two of which took my power for a total of seven days.
Also adding to the delay was my desire to make sure this was DONE RIGHT! This upgrade is something I am VERY proud of & wanted it to look it's very best. However I didn't realize I was going to have to switch the programs I use to build the site from Microsoft Frontpage to the more complex Dreamweaver. (For those of you who are familiar with the programs, Dreamweaver isn't something you learn overnight.) So I crash coursed it using online tutorials & the ever so patient patience of my good friend & site partner Ryan from Universal E-Solutions. Both of us have the attention span of a gnat too, so getting this site done with both of us in the room at the same time just doesn't happen.
Many many thanks to Joel Denver & the ALLACCESS.com staff for once again helping spread the word about our re-launch. Many thousands first found this site through ALL ACCESS & we are very appreciative of their support !
Also thanks to FMQB.com for sliding us into the news section of their site Friday 10/22.
Ok, with that said i'd like to say a few hellos, goodbyes and congrats to some of our fellow WFLZ friends:
For those who may not know, longtime WFLZ General Manager & Clear Channel Florida Gulf Coast Regional VP Dave Reinhart was released by Clear Channel recently. Very sad to see him go doesn't even begin to describe it but at the same time, we are so glad we had him around for 15 great years! Thank you for everything Dave!
Dan DiLoreto is stepping into Dave's position.
Longtime Power Pig/93.3FLZ Mixmaster & multi-Billboard Magazine award winning Music Director Stan "The Man" Priest has jumped to the next level in radio, that of Program Director of South Central Communications / Evansville, IN's Top 40 WSTO (Hot 96). Replacing him at 93.3FLZ was to be midday diva Dana but she left the station the same week Stan did. The Music Director gig went into the very capable hands of night guy Kane.
Word came down late Friday (10/22) that Big Woody (aka Brad James) had resigned from his Program Director position at 620WDAE in Tampa after spending nearly 20 years in the building between WDAE/WFLZ/WFLA. Big Woody was an original Power Pig weekender but spent many years in WFLZ production as well. No word on where he's headed next yet.
Congrats out to former Power Pigger Rob "The Ragman" Wagman who is back to programming radio. He leaves his ALLACCESS.com gig to become Program Director of Clear Channel Charlotte's new 96.1 The Beat.

And last, for you die hard WFLZ fans, just right click on this little icon, select "Save Picture As" & you'll have yourself a PowerPig / 93.3FLZ AIM Buddy Icon. I believe I have my friend Rachel to thank for that!
ENJOY! That's all for now. Always check right here for the latest news about the site & the people that are all a part of it. E-mail me anytime at raydiodude@aol.com or catch me on AIM/AOL under the screen names Raydiodude or ThePowerPig.
And of course, PLEASE take a minute to sign The Power Pig guest book or just read some of the e-mails we get in CONTACT PIG.
